I do recall a particular instance, some years back, when I suffered a writer’s block.
It happened while I was working on a “Grievous Hurt” case which involves a maid who had been physically abused by her employee. The case drew media attention from within and outside the country since the victim was an Indonesian. Suffice to say, I was under tremendous pressure to secure a conviction.
The judge had given both parties 2 weeks to prepare for the closing arguments. Ample time to write a “masterpiece”, I thought. Except that I wasn’t expecting my brains to go AWOL on me right to the eleventh hour!
I did everything humanly possible to break the spell: I talked to myself/my friends/my cat/the janitor, eat, sleep, wake up, eat some more, twirl and spin in my chair till I got dizzy. Frivolous stuffs like that.
When the ‘blockage’ finally got un-blocked, about a week before the due date, it was a frantic race to the finishing line! And although the finished product was nowhere near at being “a masterpiece”, it did the job well enough to give me what I wanted out of the case.
The Prosecution rests, m’Lord 🙂 FYI, I’ve written and published a similar post last year, The Little Toe. Check it out if you like, okay? Thanks.
Now that’s pressure! Glad it came right in the end. 🙂
